By November 1950, the Pacific Airlift had stabilized and the West Coast Airlift Task Force (prOVisional) was disbanded and its responsibilities were assumed by the Continental Division of MATS. By March 1952, the Pacific Airlift was utilizing approximately 60 MATS, 60 commercial, and 15 United Nations transports. At war's end inJuly 1953, MATS had airlifted over 80,000 tons of cargo and 214,000 personnel over its Pacific Airlift routes. Its transports had returned eastward carrying over 43,000 casualties to the United States for further treatment.
Beginning on 8th May 1952, a squadron SB-29 would depart and orbit at sea as the SAC bombers took off and assembled. The SB-29 would accompany the Superfortresses until they crossed the Korean coast, then would orbit outside the coastline until the bombers had completed their mission, reversing the process on the return flight.
